Speech-Language Pathologist

Tell a little bit about you, what you enjoy, how long you have been a therapist, etc.
I have been a speech-language pathologist since 2020 and have therapy experience in school and private practice settings. I previously worked as a radiologic technologist with clinical and hospital experience. I love spending time with my family and friends as much as possible. I enjoy grilling and smoking meats, camping, and playing both video and board games.

What do you like most about the work we do here?
I like the focus on the client, their family, and the community. Intervention can seem like a very personal thing, but the effects are long reaching in the families and communities of those we serve.

What are you most proud of in your career so far?
It is an incredible feeling when I have received a note or feedback from a parent about how their child has grown and shown improvement in the communication areas we have been working on. I am proud of the opportunity to help them in any way I can.

What’s one thing people don’t know about you that they would be surprised to find out?
I have an addiction to hammocks and hammock accessories.

What piece of advice would you give to your younger self?
I would share a quote, “Dude, sucking at something is the first step to being sort of good at something”.

If you could have any superpower, what would it be?
I would have Dimensional Storage. The ability to reach into my bag and pull out whatever I needed at the time would be amazing!

How did you decide to go into speech/occupational therapy?
I was able to job shadow a SLP in a school setting and felt a calling to work with children. It is important for me to develop a relationship with my clients and their families, and I can use all the skills from my previous jobs to make a difference in their lives.

What is one thing that you wish people knew about your job?
I wish people understood how extensive the speech-language pathology field is, and how many people are impacted by the inability to communicate effectively. I wish I had known and understood this myself when I was growing up.

If you had three wishes, what would they be?
1. That everyone would just be kind to one another.
2. That Bath & Body Works would bring back Dancing Waters foaming hand wash.
3. That I would have a pair of brand-new socks to wear every day.

What do you enjoy most about working here?
The people, both staff and clients. I have been impressed by the passion, empathy, and integrity of my coworkers, and the commitment, understanding, and resolve of the families we serve.

What, if anything, are you currently binge-watching? Or reading?
I love reading and re-reading Calvin and Hobbes. Even though it’s a comic strip, it continues to help me maintain a perspective and understanding on the minds of children and the importance of imagination. And I could say the same thing about binge watching Bluey.

What’s one thing on your bucket list?
I want to visit Churchill, Manitoba, the polar bear capital of the world!
